The game does a good job of providing enough options for customisation and progression without unnecessarily complicating the action, which must always remain the star. Returning from the first game is the full customisation options for multiplayer contests, meaning players can select maps, match types and weapon load-outs before starting a game. The use of mechanised suits and tactical warfare will certainly play a vital part in making Lost Planet 2 stand out from other shooters. In team modes this can motivate players to work together, with one in the suit and another on hand to offer covering fire or tend to repairs. However, getting inside a suit does mean that the user becomes a pretty obvious target for all opponents, which can result in a lot of damage being inflicted. The armoured suits feature different weapons, such as mini-guns and grenade launchers, which makes the player a fearsome threat on the battlefield. However, one of the best features returning from the first game is the mechanical Vital Suits, which are plentifully available in a variety of strengths, ranging from body armour to mechanised walkers. The mines and plasma grenades also prove useful for dislodging well dug-in opponents. Each map has a good range of weapons dotted around for collection, with rocket launchers, assault rifles and shotguns all packing a punch. Maps are large enough to accommodate 16 players without ever feeling cramped, although matches with fewer than ten participants could feel a touch empty. Water and wind effects are reproduced nicely and the physics seem well engineered. The visual presentation of Lost Planet 2 is solid, with the smooth tones being subtle yet effective, and the character models well created.

Towers and bridges are available to climb for sniping, while hills and broken structures offer good ambush points. One of the available maps is Turbulent Jungle, a rather run-down fortress in a verdant area providing a great variety of tactical options for the player. As EDN III's landscape is now ice-free, the multiplayer maps deliver a much wider range of scenery beyond the bleak white worlds, including desert tracks and lush tropical stretches. Also returning from the first title are the two core multiplayer modes - Elimination (deathmatch) and Data Post capture, which involves teams of players trying to activate outposts around a map, and then defend them.
